This Foundation Pieced Quilt called Flower Market includes a video tutorial showing you how to paper piece the flowers on the border! [Edited on July 2025]
This is my quilt, Flower Market. The flowers around the outer border were paper-pieced, and those in the center were created using a circular ruler I had purchased. This is actually how this quilt started, as I wanted to try out the ruler. The design evolved from there. There is something about this design that makes me want to look at it all the time – could it be the paper-pieced flowers? The colors? The butterflies?
It is very scrappy and showcases different techniques. Lots of textures! The 3D effect of the yo-yos is a favorite with my sons. By placing them as I did, they resemble the pistil of flowers. I did not write a pattern for it. It is what happens when I want to put things together on a whim.
As you can see, I had fun adding texture to the pink background as I freemotion quilted different motifs throughout. The grey petals were appliqued using satin stitch (a first for me!), but the butterflies were done with my favorite blanket stitch. I had only enough of the white and green fabric for the narrow borders and of the toile white and green for the yo-yos.
I used Aurifil 50wt for piecing and Aurifil monofilament for quilting this project. The monofilament was perfect to add texture without adding color, which is precisely what I wanted to do. The fabrics are mostly by Moda (I used some leftover fabric from my design for Moda Bake Shop – see it here).
The pattern for the flowers can be found in Carol Doak’s book “300 Paper-Pieced Quilt Blocks“, a book I love! I made a video to show you how I made the border of this Foundation Pieced Quilt:
I think I’ve finally run out of the pink fabric I used for the butterflies and the center of the paper-pieced flowers. It was a lovely fabric, and I only had 1/2 yard of it. I was able to use it on my nesting bread baskets (see them here) and on this wall hanging. Now I’m out of it :-(.
“Flower Market” measures 31″ x 36″. This is the next quilt I will hang on my studio, once I take down the current one with birds.
Hope you are having a happy day!
Denise – that is really lovely. The colors and the design. It would make a great quilt for a class because of all the techniques you used.
BEAUTIFUL ……………………

What a sweet and romantic quilt! Love the yoyos!
Such a lovely fun quilt – it will be lovely to have in your studio throughout the winter time!
