Wool Block #3

Block three is finished. The bird came from a quilting design book (Continuous Line Quilting Designs), and I added all the details with wool and embroidery. I have not yet decided what block 4 will look like, although I am already thinking about sashing and borders.

I try different embroidery stitches on each block to add interest, dimension, color, and texture. I will probably turn this quilt into a pattern...

Here are some close ups:

My design process varies: for this wall hanging I am creating as I go along, one block at a time, with a general theme in mind, nothing else. Other times, I design a quilt in its entirety either on grid paper or using the computer.

For landscape quilts there is never a plan - I start with a background fabric, an idea of what I would like to feature on the quilt, and that is it. Landscape quilts may take days to take shape. But I digress...

I have been staying up late doing the embroidery on these blocks. Connie, one of my friends from the Wednesday quilt group, likes to say "Give me needle and thread and I will do someone's jail time!" I know exactly what she means...

  1. Your work is wonderful, it's art. There is alot of depth to the piece. What do you do with each piece when it's finished? Do you frame them? I'm a new follower so I may have missed that. You have a lot of patience.
